1.
I, with pleasure, certify that Syed Ghalib Hussain, son of Late Md. Arif, a resident of Wassypur, Bhuli Road, Dhanbad, Jharkhand (INDIA) has been known to me since 1983. I taught him Urdu Language and Literature when he joined college as an Under Graduate student. After graduation he got enrolled at the University of Delhi and completed his M. A. and M. Phil. with first class.
He has equally good command over both Hindi and Urdu (Hindi-Urdu language(s). He has participated in many national and International
Projects and programmes. He has good understanding of South Asian Society and Culture. I am sure that he will discharge his duties in regard to any teaching and research assignment with dedication.
I wish him all the best in life.

The Recommendation of the University of Oslo, Norway
Syed Ghalib Hussain is 37 years old and a native Hindi/Urdu speaker who has grown up with Magahi and Bhojpuri as well. In addition to English he also says that he knows Persian, but there is no documentation for that. He holds M.A. (1992) and M.Phil. (1995) degrees from the University of Delhi and is presently working on a Ph.D. thesis, Morphology-Syntax Interface: a Case of Hindi-Urdu. He has some experience in teaching Hindi and Urdu to foreigners, but it is not clear how much. He has developed a teaching program for students from University of California, "Zoom in Hindi _ Zoom in Urdu". The sample pages of this program together with his "Statement of research and teaching interests", and "Teaching Evaluations" shows that he is an original thinker. He has a very clear understanding of the relationship between Hindi and Urdu. An improved version of ‘Zoom’ could become a good instrument for teaching the language(s). He has submitted a 14 page-draft, "Vasudhaiva kutumbakam", a call for international brotherhood, interspersed with quotations from India's great men and holy books. Sanskrit quotations are given both in Sanskrit and in translation. He has also submitted a Hindi translation of "Alliance for a Responsible and United World". These documents show that S. Ghalib Hussain masters even the most Sanskritised variety of Hindi, but are otherwise irrelevant for the application. The application gives the impression of a dedicated and original language teacher, but since he does not have the Ph.D. degree, and as candidates with doctorates have presented themselves, he cannot be considered qualified for the post. The committee concludes that S. Ghalib Hussain is not qualified for the post.

Dear Professor Hussain:
The University of California Education Abroad Program is grateful to you for having taught and supervized our student this semester. We really appreciate the most valuable help that you have provided them in enhancing their education. We hope that this reciprocal venture of student exchange between the University of Delhi and University of California will prove to be of mutual benefit to both our institutions. We also hope that we will very soon have the privilege of reciprocating your help.
As our semester comes to an end, we have to submit an evaluation of the student performance to the University of California system so that the student can receive appropriate academic credits. Enclosed with this is a Grade Report Form. We would appreciate if you could complete the form with the relevant grade/numerical score information. We also provide space for your comments and overall evaluation which will be of help to us.
We are enclosing a self addressed/stamped envelop so that you can mail the grade back to us. We will really appreciate if the grades are mailed to us as soon as possible. We can also arrange to collect the grades if you please let us know when the grades are ready. To enable us to process the grades so that they are posted to the student records promptly, we would appreciate receiving the graded by December 22, 2000 or earlier.
Thank you very much for your assistance and cooperation in enhancing the overall quality of our educational system. Thank you.
With best wishes,
Yours sincerely,
Vijayan Puliampet
